If you're waiting weeks or months for a good job offer to materialize . . .
it's time to stop the madness! So, let's talk about how a non-traditional job hunt can get amazing results . . . and have you entertaining a job offer in a matter of days instead of weeks and months. If you've decided it's time to make a change .
. . time to upgrade your career . . . time to make a little more money .
. . then you want to do it in a way that assures you of results. You have options.
First, there is the traditional way. You know, the one everyone tells you to do. Write a good reverse chronology resume. Mail or email it to a bunch of employers, or agencies. Post it on some popular websites like Monster and HotJobs. And sit back and wait for responses.
How long? Well, probably weeks and months. Oh, you may get lucky and get an invitation to come in for an interview. It will probably be with a HR staffer or a low-level management assistant. Never with the boss. I think you can begin to see the problems with this approach--at least if you're at all serious about advancing yourself. You're not in control.
You're at the mercy of lower level interviewers. You're shot gunning you credentials in the hopes that something will eventually stick. And most importantly, you're condemning yourself to a long, long job campaign! A non-traditional job hunt is completely different. It doesn't start with your resume.
Instead, you spend some quality time identifying the names of organizations where there's a match between your interests and qualifications and their needs. And you identify the name of the decision-maker who could be your next boss. The next step in a non-traditional job hunt is to design a strategy for getting yourself in front of those key decision-makers. Your most valuable assets to achieve this goal are what the non-traditional job hunt calls "career partners." These are friends, neighbors, relatives, community leaders, religious leaders, successful business people--all of whom can be fabulous resources if they are approached correctly. Your career partners provide access to the people you'd love to go to work for.
And then, following a carefully structured non-traditional job hunt communication strategy, you represent yourself in person. You demonstrate how you can make a difference to the organization. You show how you understand organizational needs and how you can make a contribution going forward. The reason a non-traditional job hunt plan works is because it's based on common sense.
After all, your next boss could care less what you used to do for someone else. A non-traditional job hunt keeps you on track and focused on the goal . . . getting a good job offer in record time!.
